Carina Jimenez

My work opens a conversation about: machismo, sexism and it illustrates my theory of its origin in religious practices. It also depicts my belief that religion is a factor that allows for discrimination of women.

Because of stories like Adam and Eve, Catholicism prevents women to occupy
any Ecclesiastical titles and they are regarded as temptresses or the embodiment of sin.
I have already completed two oil paintings that replace the men depicted in important religious historical paintings with myself; illustrating the shift in power that occurs when you switch the gender of the figures depicted.

For the residency, I will create a body of work that will contain 8 oil paintings with an average scale of 5 feet in length and width. I will be retelling the story of Jesus Christ, as well as highlighting the scriptures that fortify my theory.

Residency: February 21 – May 31, 2017
